Our friends, Julie and Julian invited us to travel to the Bellarine peninsula for a night in Portarlington. We travelled across on the Sorrento to Queenscliff ferry which makes the trip so much more enjoyable than driving all the way. None of us had been to Portarlington before and we all really liked it. The sorrounding countryside is so very different from the Dandenong Ranges.
On arriving in Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula, we visited the Queenscliff Maritime Museum which is right next to the ferry terminal and very interesting. We then went to Portarlington and had a walk along the pier before meeting up with our good friends Allan and Lorrelle from Geelong and all enjoyed a plate of Portarlington mussels and a few drinks.
The following day, we vistied Fort Queescliff which was built to defend Port Phillip Bay in the latter years of the 19th century and is still an active military base. A virtual tour can be found here.
We really liked Portarlington and will certainly be heading back. A few photos are below. Note that that clicking on any thumbnail opens up the full lightbox.
